Rancho Carlsbad Golf Course
A Father’s Day Tradition
For me, as with most young males, Father’s Day was always a chance to spend some time with pops on the links. While I live on the wrong coast to spend today with him now, I still took the opportunity to hit the greens today with a friend in the same position.
Rancho Carlsbad Golf Course is located in Carlsbad on El Camino Real and Cannon offering a very affordable round of par 3 golf. I had read mixed reviews online about the course, but due to it’s convienent locale, I decided to take my chances.
Disappointed is too strong a word for the course. It wasn’t a bad experience, I thoroughly enjoyed myself, but I found that the maintenance of this course was very sub par. Fairways, rough and tee boxes are a mix of several different grasses, making for very inconsistent rounds. While the maintenance was not up to par (not funny, I know) the course is actually pretty nice. It is sheltered from the nearby roadways by many trees on the back nine, and the course treated us to two par four holes running alongside the driving range. There are not many bunkers, but there’s a good chance you’ll find more than one of them as they are well placed. The greens all tend to have a domed shape, which makes well placed shots a requirement here.
Overall, I would recommend this course to my friends, because despite the shortcomings on the playing surfaces, I feel that over the years I have been lucky enough to have been spoiled while living in Mammoth Lakes. Mammoth offers a championship 18 hole experience called Sierra Star. The maintenance at The Star rivals that of Pebble Beach and I would definitely recommend a trip to the mountains for that course. Mammoth also houses a nine hole course, Snowcreek, which is not at the level of Sierra Star, but is a beautiful course nonetheless.
